Becoming a British citizen is often the final step in a long immigration journey. It’s a significant moment both legally and personally and the process must be handled with care. At Rashid Solicitors, we help eligible clients apply for citizenship through naturalisation with the accuracy, clarity, and professionalism your application deserves.
What Is Naturalisation?
Naturalisation is the process through which a non-British adult can become a British citizen. Once granted, you gain full citizenship rights, including
- A British passport
- The right to vote
- The right to live, work and study in the UK without restrictions
- Protection from immigration removal or loss of status
Your citizenship cannot be removed unless serious legal grounds apply.
Who can apply?
You may be eligible to apply for naturalisation if
- You are over 18
- You have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status
-
You have lived in the UK for at least 5 years
(or 3 years if applying as the spouse of a British citizen) -
You have not been outside the UK for more than 450 days in the last 5 years
(or more than 270 days in the last 3 years if applying as a spouse) - You have not broken immigration laws during your stay
- You meet the good character requirement
- You have passed the Life in the UK Test
- You meet the English language requirement (unless exempt)
your application is not submitted unless you meet the legal threshold.

Disbursements and Additional Costs
Some immigration matters may involve payments to third parties. These are called disbursements. They are not part of our legal fee and are usually payable directly to the provider or through us with your approval. We will always explain any disbursement in advance so you can plan accordingly.

- Interpreter or translation services
- Medical or expert reports
- DNA testing (if required by the Home Office)
- Barrister or advocate fees (for hearings or appeals)
- Document certification or courier services
- Life in the UK or English language test fees
How long does it take?
Once your application is submitted, the Home Office typically takes
- 3 to 6 months to process most naturalisation applications
- Some cases may take longer if further checks are required
We will guide you through the whole process and give realistic expectations based on current timelines.
Why professional help matters
Naturalisation may seem like a simple form, but many applications are delayed or refused due to
- Inaccurate travel histories
- Missing ILR evidence
- Unclear financial or residence records
- Mistakes in dates or eligibility criteria
- Failing to meet the good character requirement
Submitting an incorrect application can be expensive and damaging. Working with a solicitor ensures your case is reviewed in detail, structured properly, and submitted only when you’re ready.
Who will handle your case
Your application will be managed or overseen by a qualified solicitor. We provide all clients with a written engagement letter explaining the work involved, the fees, the timescales, and your rights throughout the process.
Language support
We support Bengali, Sylheti, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic, Somali and a range of other languages. Let us know your preferred language when contacting us. We can arrange an interpreter if required.
