What is ILR?
ILR allows you to live, work and study in the UK without time restrictions.
It also allows you to apply for British citizenship after 12 months.
With ILR, you no longer need to extend your visa.
However, it can be lost if you leave the UK for two years or more,
or in serious legal circumstances.
Who can apply?
You may be eligible to apply for ILR if you
-
Have completed five years on a visa such as a Spouse Visa,
Skilled Worker, or Ancestry Visa - Have lived in the UK for ten continuous years with lawful immigration status
- Hold discretionary leave, private life leave, or another long-term route
- Have passed the Life in the UK Test
- Meet the English language requirement

Why professional help matters
Many ILR applications are refused due to avoidable errors, including
- Gaps in residence or unclear time spent outside the UK
- Incomplete travel or visa histories
- Problems with financial or identification documents
- Failing to meet the Life in the UK or language requirements
There is no automatic right of appeal for most ILR refusals.
Working with a solicitor helps prevent costly delays and ensures
your application meets all requirements the first time.
